2014-15 Pre-Season: Free Agency begins tonight, RFA reminder, GM cleanup

FREE AGENCY PERIOD & SCHEDULING

Given the storm over the weekend, we have temporarily postponed the start of free agency to allow GMs to get a final round of contracts and qualifying offers in.

Free agency will begin TONIGHT after 8pm.

The schedule will advance daily to allow folks to review whether free agents have accepted contract terms. Since trades will be open again, I’ll be able to update the website as well. If I can get the free agent list working on the site, we’ll have a (close to) real-time list of current FAs.

The 2014-15 season will begin on Friday, February 15.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS AND QUALIFYING OFFERS

I want to remind everyone that if you do not tender qualifying offers to your RFAs – even if you DO submit a regular contract offer – you run the risk of them becoming unrestricted free agents.

A qualifying offer is essentially a 1-year contract at a 5-10% raise over the previous year. The QO ensures that you retain rights to your RFA during the free agency period. You have a chance to continue negotiating with your RFA. In addition, should someone else attempt to sign your RFA (“Offer Sheet”), you can either match the contract terms and keep your player or accept compensation.

Compensation varies according to contract terms. A high-end player will be worth multiple first-round picks while a low-end skater might pull a third or fourth rounder, if anything.

If you do not qualify your RFAs and they become unrestricted free agents, you lose the matching rights and compensation.

GM CLEANUP

Should a team hit free agency with all RFAs unqualified and no UFAs re-signed, the GM will immediately be removed to allow the CPU to ice a competitive roster.

We had some teams get screwed last season due to this and eight skaters with a 73 or worse overall rating were signed to crazy contracts in order to reach the salary floor.

ROSTER FREEZES

Roster freezes are NOT in effect for any GMs removed during the playoffs. These guys have had ample time to re-join the league and have not done so.

Detroit (who left voluntarily) has waived his right to a roster freeze. You may submit trades as appropriate.
